G'day All

Hoping someone out there can help with a supplier of a downconverter for the HRPT transmisions from NOAA satellites. I have completed a APT setup however can only get pictures from 3 out of 4 satellites due to NOAA16 having it's APT turned off.

Thanks in advance

HRPT Receiver.

hi, yeah exactly.
The HRPT is a digital mode with a wideband signal.
So I don´t think a normal RX will do.
I guess you mean the APT Transmission from Meteosat-7 on L-Band, Stephane ? That would work with a converter or normal ~40 Khz. wide Rx.
I´m receiveing the APT pictures of the Noaas in the 137 Mhz band already quite good and would like to try HRPT with a tracked 90cm l/s-Band dish perhaps in future.
Which Receiver you would me to suggest for the HRPT transmissions then?

HRPT Transmissions - Receiver

Hi, any idea where to get a HRPT receiver from ?
(Or a building instruction.)

HRPT receiver

Hi Nils,

The HRTP SHF receiver is very different to the APT receiver
used for VHF satellite work.

The bandwidth of the APT signal is 50KHz, but the HRPT is 2 MHz bandwidth.

The APT RF Carrier is Frequency Modulated with a 2.4KHz amplitude Modulated subcarrier.

HRPT uses a BPSK modulator fed with 665KHz digital data rate (5 spectral bands of 10 bit data).

Let me know if you want more information

Hi Nils, The HRPT receiver

Hi Nils,

The HRPT receiver can be any commercial receiver able to monitor 1.7GHz like AR3000, AR5000, IC R8500, and so on...You just need to have a bandwith wide enough (30 to 50KHz)

But if you are using a Downconverter to 137MHz, a very simple VHF receiver easy to make will be enough. Just google 137MHz receiver and you will find plenty of schematics.

Few years ago I've made a good 144MHz receiver with only 2 or 3 chips and some passive components. Easy to do, really...

Here is a french link for

Here is a french link for the TV970 meteosat downconverter :

http://www.comelec.fr/default.asp?cat=29&sscat=112

it costs 130 euros.

You can find some others by googleing 'meteosat downconverter'

With meteosat gone from analog to digital, there are plenty of amateurs selling their equipment. You may check this way.

Otherwise, you can still build one like :

Thanks for the link

Hello Stéphane and others

Thanks for the link I will definately give that one some consideration. I also looked into the Winradio product which would have saved me the downconverter issue, however I found another website mentioning the winradio bandwidth let it down for HRPT work. My background is in Microcontroller electronics RF never interested me however this has all changed. I will let you all know if I find anything worth posting

Thanks once again for your help
